Bristol midwife-led birth centre open at Cossham Hospital
A team of 10 midwives and five maternity care assistants are getting ready to welcome the first new arrivals at Bristol’s new Cossham Birth Centre which will open on 28 January.
The new midwife-led freestanding birth centre, the first of its kind in Bristol, is located on the top floor of the newly refurbished Cossham Hospital and will provide a home from home setting with great facilities where healthy women with straightforward pregnancies in Bristol and South Gloucestershire can give birth.
Cossham Hospital, which opened in 1907, has been refurbished by NHS South Gloucestershire and services at the hospital will be run by the North Bristol NHS Trust.
The birth centre features four birthing rooms, each of which has its own pool offering women the opportunity to use water for labour and birth. Additional birthing aids will be available to support the natural process of childbirth. Aromatherapy will be available to help women relax and relieve symptoms in labour.
The rooms provide a homely and intimate atmosphere and are comfortably furnished with double beds, sofas and en-suite facilities. Fathers and partners will be able to take advantage of overnight stay options with open kitchen, bathrooms and visiting facilities
